May 12, 2001 was an amazing day. It went by without a hitch. After our wedding we drove to Tulsa, Oklahoma to catch a flight the next day for Florida. All the way to Tulsa I kept telling Chris, “I’m Cary Plunkett today.” It was amazing to me that from now on I would be known as Cary Plunkett, Chris Plunkett’s WIFE! Chris Plunkett was my HUSBAND. For almost five years we had been boyfriend and girlfriend now we were HUSBAND AND WIFE!
When we returned from our honeymoon we hit married life hard! We returned on a Friday and I had knee surgery the following Monday. I was on the couch in our townhouse for 4 weeks wearing a knee brace from my thigh to my ankle. It was super awesome. Not really. As soon as I was able to walk up and down the stairs Chris had a horrible stomach virus that left him on the couch in the townhouse for almost two weeks. Chris often tells people we’ve been married almost sixteen years and the last 14 have been awesome.
During our first year of marriage Chris’ parents got divorced, he turned his back on God, and I felt like I had nothing except my faith to lean on. Chris was so angry with God he put all of our religious books in boxes and put them in the top of our closet. The ONLY religious books that were left out were my Bible and “The Power of a Praying Wife,” by Stormie Omartian. If you know Chris now you would never believe the amount of rebellion he had in his heart. As someone that knew him before this rebellion it was hard to watch.
Everything about this time was hard. I was not brave. I read my Bible every day and prayed for Chris more than I had at any other time. I knew he was running from God but I could not make him turn around. It had to be something he did on his own. For almost three years we lived in this cycle. During this time we decided to build a house in Greenwood because obviously he wasn’t in ministry any more. I was sad that my life had become this. I had high hopes of great ministry and I was watching it crumble.
About six months after our house was built Chris was in the garage and had been there for quite some time. When I went to see what he was doing I saw my husband as a broken man. He apologized for wasting those first years of our marriage. He immediately wanted to go and apologize to our pastor and my parents. Within 24 hours he was back to the man I married. He started teaching a college small group at church and hosting home groups in our house.
Chris Plunkett is quite a force. He began to devour books and his Bible like I’ve never seen. His giftedness of teaching God’s Word was being used every week in our college class. God had blessed us beyond measure and did amazing things during that time.
People will sometimes tell me that it looks like I have a lot of faith because I believe in miracles and crazy prayers. I do have a lot of faith because I have prayed for amazing things and God has shown up in major ways, better than I could have EVER imagined. I prayed and fasted daily for my husband to turn back to God. It was not my timing for sure. It was all God. God gave me Chris Plunkett to grow me and show me His grace in living form.
